Located at 446 Columbus Ave in the heart of New York City’s Upper West Side, The Milling Room offers a compelling take on New American cuisine that seamlessly balances rustic charm with refined elegance. This restaurant stands out not only for its diverse and thoughtfully crafted menu but also for its inviting, spacious dining atmosphere that feels both warm and sophisticated.
The culinary experience here is truly a journey through bold, fresh flavors and expertly prepared dishes. Signature plates like the Jurgielewicz Farm Duck Breast, with its rich, tender meat, and the show-stopping Grilled Octopus—perfectly charred and infused with subtle smoky notes—are testament to the kitchen’s mastery. For seafood lovers, the Sea Bass and Halibut demonstrate a delicate balance of fresh catch and skillful seasoning, while the Hamachi Crudo offers a silky, refreshing start to your meal.
Vegetable accompaniments such as the Brussels Sprouts, roasted to crispy perfection, and the Candy Cane Beets salad, featuring creamy goat cheese and crunchy pistachios, celebrate seasonal produce with thoughtful pairings. The kitchen also masterfully delivers on comfort classics with an elevated twist—imagine the Braised Short Rib Hash or the Dry Aged NY Strip that arrive packed with savory depth and tender textures that linger on the palate.
The Milling Room’s dessert offerings are no less impressive, with luscious Lava Cake and a delicately tart Panna Cotta Con Frutto Della Passione providing a sweet conclusion to your meal that’s as visually delightful as it is delicious.
The dining room itself is a visual feast. According to regular visitors, the space is "majestic" and "beautiful," combining ample natural light with elegant finishes that create an airy yet intimate atmosphere ideal for everything from casual brunches to special evening dinners. The front bar buzzes during the popular happy hour (weekdays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm), where expert bartenders craft cocktails like the classic Manhattan and Bloody Mary, all served with professional flair and congeniality.
What truly elevates the experience is the exceptional service. Guests frequently praise the attentive and knowledgeable staff, with one noting the "impeccable" hospitality and a manager who ensures every guest feels genuinely cared for. This thoughtful approach creates a relaxed yet polished environment where every detail is handled with care, enhancing the overall joy of dining here.
The carefully curated wine list complements the menu wonderfully, featuring robust Malbecs from Mendoza and elegant Bordeaux Merlots, which perfectly balance the bold flavors of the dishes. Whether you’re pairing a hearty steak with a full-bodied red or enjoying lighter fare with a crisp salad and a glass of white, The Milling Room’s beverage offerings enhance every bite.
Bringing all elements together—the artfully composed menu, the inviting ambiance, and the stellar service—The Milling Room stands as a must-visit culinary gem in New York City’s Upper West Side. Whether you seek a lively happy hour hotspot or an elegant setting for a memorable dinner, this restaurant delights the senses and leaves a lasting impression beyond the plate.
Milling room is a very underrated gem tucked away in UWS, right across from the museum. I've gone for both happy hour (every day from 4:30-6:30pm) and dinner: both are excellent. Happy hour is in the front at the bar, the menu is solid and the bartenders are always on their A game. Dinner is in their majestic, large dining room in the back and is one of the most visually appealing places to dine in the city (in my humble opinion). For happy hour, get yourself a $10 cocktail and pair it with their burger and fries combo. The cocktail is super high quality and a great deal considering that an equivalent elsewhere runs for $15 or higher. The burger is up there with the greats. Will def back back here many more times.
Ambiance and service were great. I was here for brunch at 11:30am and it was very sleepy, which is great for conversation. The food and cocktails were OK/good, nothing special, but it was also reasonably priced so would return.
The Milling Room is good, the decor is interesting enough, the staff attentive and the food well presented and cooked. It's sort of a "hearty meal" in that there's plenty on your plate and lots of meat. It's actually a very good restaurant and if you are nearby it's a worthwhile choice... In general the meat seemed more compelling than the salmon which is what I had.. In general though it wasn't very differentiated or creative...
If you want to experience a 5 Star Restaurant in France ???????? go to the Milling room on the upper West Side , A1 Service by Moussa & Staff. What a wonderful dinner I had with my family. The service was impeccable. Our server was so knowledgeable about the menu and took his time to explain each dish that we were curious about. The staff is excellent! Moussa the manager made sure we were well taken care of and came to our table multiple times to ask us if we needed anything else. The cocktails and food were absolutely delicious! The Chef Florian Hugo did an amazing job bringing wonderful fall flavors to the new menu. I highly recommend the Besos Caliente cocktail, the Tomato Feuillete appetizer, the prime striploin steak and the bourbon apple tart for dessert! If you’re looking for delicious French fine dining the Milling room will exceed your expectations! Absolutely fantastic 5 stars!
I had the most perfect time here, the venue is beautiful. I didn't know restaurants could be this good. The meal created a positive impression. Employees' service: first-rate. Mindful and polished. I suggest this place without hesitation.
I found The Milling Room as i was searching for somewhere to carry my wife for her birthday. Usually, when I give a review, I speak firstly about the sights and the sound, but this time, I need to mention the chef. I had the steak. It impacted every one of my senses. The aroma is intoxicating, and it tastes superb. All in all, it's one of the best, if not the best, steak I have ever had. Complimented by romantic setting and the professional staff. You made our visit an experience. Thank you
